Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna is reportedly close to agreeing a new two year deal at Emirates Stadium, according to reports in Mirror Football.
The Frenchman is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco, but it would appear he is set to remain with the Gunners after positive talks.
The reports suggest Sagna is set to sign improved two year contract before the January transfer window opens. The 30 year old is likely to get around £70,000 a week to stay with Arsenal showing more flexibility these days as Arsene Wenger has traditionally only offered one year extensions to players over 30.
Wenger is expecting the contract situation to be resolved within the next fortnight after a long running stalemate over Sagna’s future. He said:
Yes, that could be decided in next two weeks. It looks positive. It would be a great boost, of course.
The Gunners scouting network were already looking for new right backs as a priority amid fears Sagna would be off in the summer. But it seems the Gunners’ decision to budge from their initial proposal to offer the Frenchman a one-year extension has convinced him to stay.
Sagna has the reputation of being one of Arsenal’s most dependable players. He had a slight drop in performance in the last seasons as he broke his leg twice but he has once again illustrated his quality and worth this term. His experience will add valuable knowledge and leadership on the field, helping the team be more professional and most importantly digging in when needed to see out important results.
He has made almost 200 appearances for the Gunners since joining in 2007 and also has 37 international caps to his name. Carl Jenkinson is not ready yet to succeed him and Sagna’s ability to play at centre back as he gets older could prove vital in big games, rather than having to rely on a more youthful or new option. Losing someone of his calibre would be a big blow to the club and finding a player with his consistency and experience in January would be next to impossible.

If Sagna doesn’t agree to new terms before the transfer window reopens he will be free to sign a pre contract agreement with a club outside of England. Hopefully he will sign a new deal this month and concentrate on winning his first trophy with Arsenal.
