Arsenal have reportedly agreed a fee with Southampton to sign their highly rated right back Calum Chambers, adding another player to their summer exodus.
The 19-year-old has apparently been earmarked by the Gunners to challenge new signing Mathieu Debuchy for the right back role, with Wenger ‘expected’ to sell Carl Jenkinson or at the very least loan him out.
The Mirror claim a £7million transfer fee has been agreed between the clubs, while other sources suggest it is more in the region of £12-15m. A huge fee for a youngster who has played just 20 senior matches for the club.
Despite the widespread rumours, this deal seems like a load of sh*te. Arsene Wenger rates Carl Jenkinson and offered him a massive six year deal at the end of 2012. Certainly it makes sense to offer Jenkinson the opportunity for a loan move away, but to invest so much money in another young, up and coming right back seems incomprehensible. There is the possibility however he could be earmarked as a potential centre back signing, but so far in his professional career he has predominately operated on the right.
The tabloids are obviously clutching at straws now with a limited number of defenders linked with Arsenal of late. We need a centreback. Some more developments on Matija Nastasic would be nice.
