After a standout season which saw him win the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award and find the back of the net 17 times, Leicester winger Riyad Mahrez looks to be on the verge of joining Arsenal in a deal worth some £45m (via Eurosport).
The 25-year-old Algerian international has predictably become a hot property on the transfer market this summer. Alongside striker Jamie Vardy (who has already rejected a move to Arsenal), Mahrez was one of the leading lights in Leicester’s stunning rise to the top of the Premier League.
Manager Claudio Ranieri as recently as this month was adamant that Mahrez would be staying, though having already lost midfielder N’Golo Kanté to Chelsea, it would seem that nothing can be taken for granted.
Excitement around a Mahrez move to North London has been boosted further by the fact that the winger’s agent was recently spotted at the Gunners’ pre-season friendly match against Lens. But the agent has since then reportedly denied rumours that his man is on the move (via Givemesport).
If Mahrez can continue the excellent form he showed last season, he would be a great asset to any club, Arsenal included. On the right-wing we’ve had Theo Walcott, Joel Campbell and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain of late. All perfectly competent after a fashion but no one emerging as the clear favourite. That said, with his deft chip late-on, ‘the Ox’ did show in the Lens friendly what he’s capable of. A bit more of that and perhaps if the Mahrez deal doesn’t happen we’ll be quite happy he decided to stay put.
