There is a mixture of good news and not so good today as it has been revealed that Koscielny will only be out for approximately a week, Gervinho has returned to the squad and Jenkinson is set to return to full training next.
However there is a big blow for the giant Mertesacker who faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on his ankle.
Arsène Wenger spoke aheadof Saturday’s FA Cup trip to Sunderland:
[on Gervinho] He is back in the squad. From the other night, we have lost Koscielny. Everyone else is available for selection.
[on Laurent Koscielny’s knee problem] He had a scan yesterday and the news is quite good. He will be out for hopefully around a week. He will miss the Sunderland game. But he should be back for next week.
[on Per Mertesacker’s ankle problem] Unfortunately he has had surgery and we have lost him for a while. How long I don’t know. He had reconstruction of his ligaments. So it will be long term.
[on Kieran Gibbs’ return] He played his first game in four months in Milan. So of course it was a shock to go back to that level. But physically, he is alright.

[on Carl Jenkinson] He is back in full training on Monday. That is good news for us.
The news for Koscielny is what everyone needed to hear, if the Gunners lost the Frenchman for a number of league matches a top four finish would seem an even bigger mountain to climb. With that good news there is also terrible news for German international Mertesacker who may now miss his chance to go to Euro 2012 if he fails to regain fitness.
Just when it seemed that Wenger would have a full strength backline to choose from injury struck once again, we can not afford anymore injuries in the coming weeks with some huge fixtures approaching such as Spurs at home and Liverpool away. But the last thing Wenger can do is rotate with the squad so thin. Hopefully he chooses to use Song in defence with Djourou a complete liability.
