The Gunners have an intense August ahead of them with a double meeting with Udinese either side of a match with Liverpool followed by a gruelling trip to Old Trafford to face Champions Manchester United.
“We have worked hard and I feel we are ready for it because the fitness is good in the team and we feel good,” Vermaelen told the Official Arsenal Magazine.
“We have had a good pre-season over the past few weeks. In pre-season, the most important thing is training hard and getting your fitness back.
“We worked really hard in Germany, as hard as we did in Austria, so that was a tough week for us to get our fitness back. I think that week was really important and we were very pleased with that.”
August will have a huge impact on the season, with not only the transfer window closing on August 31st, but the tricky matches that are compacted into the end of August. Although the pre-season results should only be taken with a pinch of salt, they weren’t impressive. However they demonstrated the lack of ‘super quality’ in our squad with key men Fabregas and Nasri missing, however Gervinho and Van Persie will be a force to reckon with this season. Fingers crossed for a successful August.
