Calum Chambers has been the subject of much speculation over the past few weeks. The subject of a big money transfer from Southampton, the 19 year old was originally brought in as a defensive back up. But due to a spate of injuries, the youngster has become a regular starter for the Gunners.
Wenger has indicated that he sees Chambers as a centre back for the future, but for the moment he is playing at the right back position. And with Debuchy out for the next three months, he looks set to play there for now. He was also a right back at Southampton, where he made 22 appearances for the Saints last season.
Chambers played against his former teammates in the midweek loss to Southampton, and in the game against Spurs he will face ex-manager Mauricio Pochettino. But Wenger insists that the youngster will be able to cope with the pressure.
I don’t know [how he feels] because he played against Southampton and after [that] he plays against his former manager. The only thing I can say is that he looks like he’s dealing well with the pressure.
We forget a little bit that top-level competition is first of all pleasure, enjoyment and I just want him to enjoy the game. We forget sometimes that it’s a huge joy to play at that level and I just want him to enjoy it.
For us he has straight away become a regular player. For a 19-year-old boy that’s very demanding in a club where the requests are very high but he absorbs the game very well, not only physically but as well he deals very well with the huge pressure that is on him for such a big game.

[The yellow cards worry me] a little bit because he has three yellows and after five you miss a game. But that’s down to the fact that he’s committed and lacks sometimes experience in the challenge.
The yellow cards are a slight point of concern, as our injury ravaged backline cannot afford a suspension. But Wenger will be sure to impress on the teenager to be on his best behaviour for the next few games. As for the North London Derby, a player with the potential of Chambers will be sure to relish such a challenge.
