Arsene Wenger has claimed that if he buys players this transfer window they must be special and will not settle for anything less as he aims to satisfy fans cravings for signings.
The Frenchman does not want to disappoint but has again praised the quality of his team that responded from an opening day loss to win all three points against Fulham 3-1.
Arsenal have sold a whole host of players this summer, mainly classified by Gooners as ‘deadwood’, but they have failed to top up the squad which is starting to look quite thin. Injuries have also worried fans with club captain Vermaelen, Arteta and Oxlade-Chamberlain all unavailable for some time.
The Arsenal boss labelled his current crop of players as ‘special’ and admits he only wants to add something ‘special’ to the team. He said the following in his pre-match press conference:
I still am optimistic and I hope I will not disappoint you.
We have not a fixed number [of signings in mind]. I just think we are a bit short at the moment.

I’m guided by my conscience to do as well as I can for this club and by the vision of the game I want to play. I feel with the players I have I can play the football we want to play. I’m a great admirer of the spirit, the attitude of these players. They are special and if I want to add something it has to be special.
I will not give you any names, because it would be unfair for the players who play at another club. It could, as well, create some wrong hopes.
You could see that many of the disputes you have all over the country is because the coaches or the managers speak about the players. In our job, just be discreet and try to make things happen. That’s what we try to do. You can come back to me and say: ‘Yes, but you don’t make things happen.’
But it’s still only most important in our job is what happens on the football pitch and how well you play football. The rest we work very hard on.
Wenger has pretty limited time to save our disappointment. This summer has been frustrating and we all know that the Frenchman wants ‘quality’ not ‘quantity’. There has been so much quality in the market but unfortunately they have not managed to acquire any of the top talent around.
For me, Cabaye is not the type of player we should be buying but we may have no choice – just like in the 2011 summer window. It is clear we will struggle to really get anyone ‘special’. The calibre of players that would fit into that category are the likes of Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney. The Gunners will struggle to secure these types of players this late on in the window.
Maybe Arsenal should be looking to sign John Obi Mikel from Chelsea, a solid defensive midfielder with an abundance of experience.. He’s not ‘special’ but would at least reinforce the squad exactly where we want it. I’ve essentially given up hope of a star striker coming in, Benzema is as likely to come as is Rooney.
What are your thoughts Gooners?
