Arsene Wenger is set to make a shock move for St Etienne captain Loic Perrin in the January transfer window, as he looks to strengthen his injury hit squad ahead of the second half of the season.
The 29-year-old centre half has emerged as a surprising potential target for Arsenal according to The Mirror, with Wenger admiring the versatility and experience that the Frenchman can bring to his squad.
St Etienne captain Perrin, who is valued at £6 million, has been a mainstay at the heart of his side’s defence this season, and can also play at right back or in a defensive midfield role.
His versatility is said to appeal to Wenger who has been forced to play people out of position due to Arsenal’ recent injury crises.
Another advantage is that Perrin would be available for the Champions League ties against Monaco and in any future rounds, as he has not played in European competitions this season.

As a result Wenger could be set to launch a move for the Frenchman who has spent his whole senior career at St Etienne having graduated from their youth academy in 2003.
Since then he has made 227 appearances for the club, scoring 18 goals, and has also been capped by France at under-19’s and under-21’s level.
The Mirror adds that Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin remains Wenger’s top target, but Ronald Koeman is unlikely to allow the French midfielder to leave the South Coast club in the January transfer window.
