The Gunners exhibited their confidence against Napoli where they finished the game in the opening 15 minutes with two well taken goals and ambled through the rest of the game while being solid defensively.
The Gunners have scored a league-high four goals in the opening 15 minutes of Premier League games this season and Wenger believes confidence has helped them to start games better.
Speaking to the Arsenal official website, he said:
We started at such a good pace because we had a remembrance of the Emirates Cup where they [Napoli] started very strong.
We knew on our side that it was vital for us to come out of the blocks in a very sharp way and it was successful. Of course you cannot plan that you score early goals but it worked well.
This is quite the difference from last season, when Wenger’s men were considered a second-half team and the Frenchman has said that’s how football can change. He added:
It’s completely different. That shows you how unpredictable the situations are but maybe it’s linked with the confidence.
When the team has confidence they go into the game with a positive feeling and a positive attitude. The more you build that confidence up with the results, the more you go into the next game thinking let’s just do it to win the game.
Arsenal’s performance against Napoli was one of the most accomplished performances I’ve seen in recent years. The first half was a scintillating affair and it brought two outstanding goals while the second half showed the solidity of our defence. The two varying styles were equally effective and for any team to be able to play that way is fantastic.

The Gunners have been scoring a lot of goals in the opening quarter of an hour which is one of the reasons why they are at the top of the table. The defence has also been top class as they protected some slender leads which we couldn’t do in the last few years. We clearly have most things going our way as we have the momentum and confidence. If we can continue this form then this might be the season where Arsenal finally ends their trophy drought.
The North London club will take on West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Sunday as they look to extend their lead at the top of the table. We recently had the better of the Baggies in the Capital One Cup where they beat them on penalties despite fielding a youthful side.
