West Brom v Arsenal
Barclays Premier League
Kick off: October 6, 2013 4:00 PM BST
A relatively poor performance by our recent standards earns us a draw against a decent West Brom side in a tough away fixture. Here are the player ratings:
- Reports: Arsenal Star Left National Team Early In Protest Of Poor Transport Conditions
- Robert Pires Reveals What Emery’s Two Main Objectives Are For Arsenal This Season
- Reports: Arsenal Become Shock Front Runners For Wantaway Chelsea Star
Wojciech Szczesny | 7.5: Wasn’t kept busy the entire game but had a number of important saves to make. Made a superb save early on after a huge deflection. Got a hand to the goal but couldn’t quite keep it out.
Carl Jenkinson | 6.5: Was pretty poor for a lot of the game. Was getting into some good positions down the right flank, but wasn’t getting his head up and was crossing to no one. Was caught out of position defensively a lot, and wasn’t pressing enough at times.
Laurent Koscielny | 7.0: Our defence wasn’t as dominant as it should have been considering the size and strength of West Brom’s forward players.
Per Mertesacker | 7.0: Zonal marking just wasn’t working for us this game and the defence was letting Olsson and McCauley get the better of them. The German was caught out a couple of times and beaten by players on occasions.
Kieran Gibbs | 7.5: Struggled a bit in the first half defensively, going forward a little too much and getting caught too far up the pitch. Got the balance right in the second half and started to have more of an influence on the game.
Mathieu Flamini | 7.5: Had a difficult task on his hands, the defence wasn’t the best today which gave Flamini more to do; Sessegnon was a real handful. Picked up an early yellow card which affected his game for the remaining minutes.
Mikel Arteta | 7.0: Was solid as usual, but not outstanding. Was composed and didn’t get dispossessed often, but wasn’t really picking out many attack minded passes either. When both he and Flamini are on the pitch they really need to take the initiative to contribute to the attacks.
Mesut Özil | 7.0: Had his dazzling moments, but looked tired and uninterested for parts of the game. His off the ball movement wasn’t really there today.
Jack Wilshere | 6.0/7.0: A game of two completely contrasting halfs for Jack. The first half was the worst 45 minutes I have seen from the young Englishmen, getting dispossessed non stop, picking the wrong passes, and really having no impact on the game whatsoever. To be fair to him, he seemed to be fouled on several occasions during his trademark driving runs, but was given nothing. Came out looking a lot better in the second half, linking up with Giroud and Rosicky and scoring Arsenal’s goal.
Aaron Ramsey | 6.75 : Was a shadow of himself when comparing today’s performance to his recent games. His passes were going astray and he was losing out in challenges he would normally win. Picked up an injury in the first half and never fully recovered, had to be substituted.
Olivier Giroud | 7.5: Hold up play and runs were good at times, wasn’t really given a lot to work with. Was held off well by the two centre backs and closed down quickly by Jacob and Mulumbu. Should have had a few decisions go his way but the referee ignored them.
Thomas Rosicky | 7.0: Still looks a bit rusty but always willing to get involved, provided the assist for Wilshere’s goal.
Nicklas Bendtner | N/A: The Dane’s first appearance in the Premier League in a long time. Wasn’t given enough of a chance to make an impact.
