A new defensive midfielder is a necessity this summer, and we have been credited with an interest in Cagliari youngster Godfred Donsah, as reported by London 24.
As the report suggests, Donsah has been dubbed “the new Michael Essien” – high praise indeed.
Francis Coquelin has been fantastic since being recalled early from his loan spell with Charlton Athletic, but we can’t rely solely on the Frenchman for the entirety of the campaign.
Having Donsah as backup could prove an excellent move, but we’re facing some serious competition. His agent Oliver Arthur claims Chelsea, Tottenham, and Liverpool are among those chasing his signature, so we may need to move quickly.
“There’s lots of interest in Donsah as of now,” Arthur said.
“Especially from clubs in the UK.

“Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal have made official enquiries about him. Until now they are scouting and there’s nothing concrete.
“The player is happy to hear of all this interest and the fact that his efforts are being noticed by bigger clubs.”
The 19-year-old has only recently broken into the first team with Cagliari, but has been hugely impressive so far. He looks to be the complete package in midfield, and may well prove a star of the future.

Bringing in a promising youngster may be the most prudent move, as it would allow Coquelin to keep his starting spot while ensuring we aren’t left light in midfield. He isn’t an out and out defensive midfielder, but boasts plenty of qualities that would make him well suited to a deeper role.
A report from the Express claims Chelsea are close to securing a £10m move for the Ghanaian, but there’s still time for us to pip them at the post.
