Abou Diaby has certainly been a comic figure in the injury league, and while a “he’ll strain a muscle pulling up his socks” joke is amusing every now and again, it’s time to rally behind him and offer the midfield the support he deserves.
The Frenchman had his ankle/leg decimated early on in his Arsenal days which almost ended his footballing career before it had a chance to blossom.
Time and time again he’s been asked the question by his struggling muscles and bones whether it’s time to hang up the boots, so many setbacks have hampered his career to say the least and it’s taken a huge amount of mental strength on his part to remain a footballer.
He’s a gifted player and has proven that on a number of occasions. Last season he formed a solid partnership in midfield with Arteta, adding the power and tenacity we craved in midfield. The most frustrating thing in the past is Wenger’s persistence to rely on the France international to be fit and part of the squad. It’s held us back in the past, but not any longer.
The Gunners now have options in midfield so it’s a positive when he’s fit. Not saying we don’t need to buy a new defensive midfielder with more Viera-esk attributes, because we do. But we should stand behind Diaby and support a player who has struggled with morale crushing injuries but keeps persevering.

His current deal expires in 2015 so if he fails to make an impact next campaign he will be off in the summer. This is his last chance to make it in north London so give him all the encouragement you can and not the incessant disrespect some supporters have shown toward a player whose given his all for the club.
Welcome back to fitness Diaby, we look forward to seeing you on the pitch.
