Arsenal qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League on Tuesday night after a second consecutive victory in the European club competition. Technically they had already qualified after a dominant display a week earlier that saw them put two past Borussia Dortmund to win it 2-0.
The win against Dortmund at Emirates ensured Arsenal qualified for the round of 16 of the Champions League for the 12th consecutive year, more than any other club in the Premier League.
A win against Galatasaray would have put Arsene Wenger’s side in a good position to lead the group only if Borussia Dortmund lost or if we had won by six goals. The former Bundesliga Champions however drew 1-1 against Belgian side Anderlecht thus prohibiting Arsenal from winning the group.
Anyway, now that The Gunners have realized qualification, who are the possible opponents? The Champions League had 8 groups named A to H. As the name ‘Round of 16’ suggests, 16 teams have progressed into the stage. Arsenal qualified after finishing second in Group D behind Dortmund. As such, they face the winner of one other group.
Furthermore, they cannot be drawn against a team that they already played against in the group stages or an English team so Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea are out of the picture. That leaves us with SIX possible opponents who finished top of their respective groups.
- Arsenal must outmanoeuvre Galatasaray to win race for £2m ‘bargain’ transfer
- Arsenal reportedly set to sign free agent after impressive trial
- Arsenal have ‘concrete interest’ in signing Bayern Munich II star
Therefore Arsenal can either face Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Monaco, Bayern Munich, Barcelona or FC Porto who finished top of group A, B, C, E, F and H respectively.
The Champions League draw will take place at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon on Monday. We’ll be on standby to keep you posted on the draw.
