I had the opportunity to be involved in a Q&A session with Gunners legend Charlie George yesterday at the Emirates, and the former Arsenal maestro did little to settle my nerves over Robin van Persie’s future.
Just an hour after purchasing a freshly printed ‘V.Persie’ shirt from the Gunners store, a decision that I may live to regret, George cast a decent amount of doubt in my mind with his comments suggesting the Dutchman’s future is far from settled.
While prior to the Emirates Legends Tour I felt that the Dutchman would indeed sign a new contract after Euro 2012, George suggested the Gunners talisman may in fact choose money over loyalty.
George said on Van Persie’s future:
[Do you think Van Persie will stay next season?]
I’d like to think so, but what would you do if you were offered more money to do the same job?
[But isn’t loyalty worth more as has been suggested in the media?]

Yeh, well times have changed, football has changed. I mean if you were working for ITV and you were offered >
£50,000 more to work for the BBC what would you do? I’d like to think he will stay but I don’t know, it’s still uncertain.
While George is not necessarily completely in ‘the know’, he has a fair idea of what is going on around the club due to his involvement. And something else that also cast further doubt in my mind is the lack of positivity around the Emirates in regards to Van Persie remaining. The official club shop workers also had a similar attitude, feeling they are very uncertain over what will happen, an opinion very far from manager Arsene Wenger.
While Wenger maintains his confidence that RvP will remain at the Emirates next season, the Frenchman spoke in a similar manner in regards to both Nasri and Fabregas prior to their summer departures, so unfortunately the Arsenal managers credibility in regards to transfer speculation has since been dampened.
If the Netherlands had won Euro 2012 it could have been a different story as the Dutchman wants to win silverware and rightly so. Unfortunately they finished bottom of their group in miserable style, meaning RvP has headed for an early holiday, whether this will be detrimental to his contract talks or not remains to be seen.
So I apologize for the gloomy article but I have grown more and more pessimistic since visiting London, however there is still a small glimmer of hope that our captain and talisman will remain that next season…
What are your thoughts? Do you think Van Persie will remain in red and white next season or be seeking greener pastures (money-wise, not grass!) like Charlie George is perhaps feeling may happen? Feel free to comment below or in allArsenal’s forum.
