Morning Sports Fans
I was out late last night (must have been all of 9 o’clock) but had a little time to have a quick glance across the stories on the various blogs and national rags. I read some stuff and I thought – “nah, nobody will swallow this crap anyway, so it doesn’t need to be addressed by me at this hour”, so I turned over, turned off my Thomas The Tank Engine Bedside Lamp and went to sleep.
I woke up this morning, the sun was shining and a little birdie was singing in the back garden and all seemed right with the world. So I turned on my laptop and found to my horror than every idiot on the web who can one-finger type was running this story as if it was gospel. Suddenly the sky turned grey and next doors ginger-tom ate the little birdie. Depression set in.
The story in question doing the rounds last night and this morning, is that Daniel Levy (Spurs Chairman) is set to purposely hold up any transfer move that Arsenal may make for Julian Draxler by refusing to allow Lewis Holtby to return to Schalke 04 on a loan move. Mr Levy, it is said, is holding up the move, as he doesn’t want a repeat of Spurs aiding Arsenal in signing Draxler, as they did with Bale and Ozil. Believe me readers, this is bullshit of the highest order.

This story appears to have originated in a certain national tabloid, by a well known sports journalist. I’m using this term very loosely, as someone writing such stuff while calling himself a journalist could be sued under the Trade Descriptions Act.
I normally have a lot of time for this man and I can only assume that it was an extremely quiet day at the office and that his editor was on his back for a banner headline story. I’m sure he’s regretting doing it this morning, as he looks in the bathroom mirror and the shame of it all hits him. I had this feeling some years ago, involving the office Christmas Party, too much drink and the boss’ wife (say no more).
Let us shine a little light of truth on this story and allow sense to return and a little sunshine back into my day.
Julian Draxler is a Schalke 04 player. He has a long term contract with Schalke, but in this contract is a release clause rumoured to be around €40M (that’s Euros friends, about £32M Sterling).
Under a release clause, if a buying club (Arsenal in this case) meets the required amount stated in the clause, this allows the player to speak to that club regarding a potential transfer (at this rate) without needing a go-ahead from the selling club. It does not however, guarantee that the player will move, that’s subject to the player wishing to move to that team and an agreement being reached between the two parties. Schalke 04 would have no say in the matter, except to receive the release clause fee, as stated in this case, €40M.
How on earth then, would Levy holding up the loan of Lewis Holtby to Schalke scupper any move that Arsenal might make for Draxler, if Arsenal meet the release clause fee? As stated earlier – total bullshit. Stop reading this drivel and stick with the boys that give you all the Arsenal news and give it to you straight – allarsenal.com (little plug there, take note Matt).
I hope that Spurs do keep Holtby and that’ll be about £50,000 a week it‘s costing spurs to keep yet another disgruntled player sitting on the bench or in the stands.
I never thought I’d admit to it, but I’m starting to develop a serious man-crush on Lucas Podolski. The guy’s great, has a terrific grin, uses public transport to tour his new city, puts some serious cash into his old club Koln to help it develop and bring youngsters through, is charitable and gives the rest of the team a lift with his sense of humour.
But the cherry on top for me is his apparent recent assertion when somebody asked him if he’d ever play for Spurs, he answered “I’d rather retire”!
You just gotta love him – AHA!
