Anzhi Makhachkala holding midfielder Odil Ahmedov believes he could be a ‘huge success’ with Arsenal, whose scouts have watched every match this season according to the Uzbek international.
The defensive midfielder, who can also play as a centreback, is reportedly on Arsene Wenger’s shortlist to fill the defensive midfield void left by Alex Song last summer and has developed into a strong contender for a summer move to the Emirates.
The 25-year-old has been no stranger to being scouted by Arsenal and even stated his desire to move to North London last year, but he has also been tracked by other top European clubs following his progress this season. Ahmedov however seems most interested in the Gunners as a place where he can thrive and push his career to the next level.
Ahmedov told Russian newspaper Izvestia:
It is true I have interest from Arsenal – their scouts have watched me in every match this season. If I move there, I could be a huge success but there is no bid yet.
The midfielder joined Anzhi in 2011 and has gone on to feature 60 times for the cash-rich Russian side in their domestic league. If indeed Arsenal scouts have monitored him this season as extensively as he claims, then he is potentially in a strong position for a move to North London.
At present Ahmedov and Victor Wanyama lead the way as favourites for Arsenal’s defensive midfielder role, with Everton’s Marouane Fellaini also tipped as a possible versatile option that can cover the more defensive position or take up a box-to-box role. While it is exciting to hear the highly-rated Ahmedov is keen on a move to Arsenal, Wanyama remains the most likely and perhaps the most preferred transfer option for the summer. Fellaini remains too good to be true – he’s got an expensive price-tag and could join the likes of United.
