The recognition of his efforts highlights the 26-year-old’s victory against his critics, who have at times branded him lazy. The midfielder has been an integral part of the side that have taken themselves into the title picture – albeit on the very periphery – with eight straight wins in the Premier League.
The German has featured in three matches so far in the month, scoring once and getting two assists.
The goal came from a sumptuous free-kick in the thrashing of Liverpool at the Emirates at the start of April. And he also set up Alexis Sanchez for both goals at Wembley, as we saw off Reading in the FA Cup semi-final.
A match-winning performance in our next match against Chelsea will surely make him the favourite to see off Eden Hazard, Yannick Bolasie, Esteban Cambiasso, Christian Benteke, and Ander Herrera, and win the award.
