Nacho Monreal has committed his long-term future to Arsenal, signing a new deal with the club for an undisclosed length of time, as reported by Arsenal.com.
The 29-year-old has been an ever present for us this season, and has improved hugely since his arrival back in 2013. When he first came to the club from Malaga years ago, he didn’t look suited to the fast paced and aggressive style of the Premier League. He’s now an established member of our starting XI though, and has deservedly displaced Kieran Gibbs as our first choice left-back.
The Spaniard’s previous deal was set to expire in 2017, and although there have been no official reports from Arsenal about the length of his new deal, it is believed to run until 2019 (via The Guardian).
Monreal seems incredibly happy and settled in London, so it’s hardly surprising to see that he’s signed a new deal. Arsene Wenger seems to be a large part of the reason he’s penned a new deal, as Monreal clearly has a huge amount of respect for the Frenchman.
“I met the boss three years ago and I have a really good relationship with him and I’m really happy with him. For these reasons I extended my contract,” he said (via the BBC).
He clearly has the complete faith of Wenger too, who praised the consistency he’s been showing of late.

“He is a very important player at the club because he can play left-back and centre-back. He has the consistency in his performances that is requested at the top level,” Wenger added.
Arsenal transfer news
Monreal is obviously no longer as young as he used to be, and as a full-back he may not have too many years left at the top level. For the moment he’s one of the most consistent and reliable left-backs in the Premier League though, and until we find a worthy replacement we can’t afford to let him go.
