The 24-year-old has looked fantastic since joining the club in 2013, and appears to have all the attributes required to succeed in the top flight of English football.
Any potential deal will allegedly be dependent on Paulista securing a work permit, with young South American players without international experience often finding it problematic. Things are looking positive however, and we could soon be welcoming the defensive signing we need so badly to the Emirates.
Joel Campbell could still prove to be part of the deal, with Villarreal keen on taking the Costa Rican on loan. With Wenger already seeing his attacking options whittled down this January however, he would prefer to pay the full fee for the Brazilian.
