The squad for our pre-season Asia tour has been announced on Arsenal.com, and there are a few surprising omissions.
Danny Welbeck and Tomas Rosicky are both recovering from injuries, and will therefore remain in England. Hopefully both will return in time for the start of the season, although no return dates have been set yet.
Alexis Sanchez, David Ospina, and Serge Gnabry are the other names of note who will miss out, with all three being rested following their involvement in the Copa America and the U21 European Championships respectively.
Arsene Wenger revealed some team news ahead of the trip, giving us a little more information on the reasons behind the absences.
“Calum [Chambers] has decided to shorten his holiday and come back on Friday,” Wenger told Arsenal.com.
- Three key players return in major boost for Arsenal vs Villarreal
- Arsenal add ex-academy star priced at £10m to summer shortlist
- Arsenal are close to signing €80m midfielder for a ‘reduced price’
“He didn’t play in the under-21s and needs preparations.
“Welbeck isn’t completely recovered from the problem he had [at the end of last season]. He’s not back in full training so he will stay behind.
“Rosicky will stay back because he got a small injury at his last game against Iceland with Czech Republic.
“Ospina is on holiday until July 27 and Alexis is on holiday until August 3. Serge Gnabry is on holiday after playing with the under-21s. He’s back on July 20.”
Everyone else is fit and raring to go, and will hopefully enjoy a beneficial pre-season in Asia.

This could be a hugely important summer for a number of players, and will be the first pre-season with us for several stars.
New signing Petr Cech will obviously be experiencing his first summer at the Emirates, as will our addition from last January Gabriel Paulista. It will also be a first full pre-season for Mesut Özil, despite the German international already being at the club two full seasons. He joined us late in the summer of 2013 having spent pre-season with Real Madrid, and then missed last season’s due to his involvement in Germany’s successful World Cup campaign.
This summer could see the team bond even more, and will hopefully provide us the platform for a fantastic 2015/16 campaign.
