Arsenal have been credited with approaching Southampton centre-back Jose Fonte, however Manchester United remain favourites for his signature according to ESPN FC.
Fonte, 32, enjoyed a memorable summer with Portugal winning Euro 2016 and naturally has attracted the attention of several top clubs after strong, consistent performances in the Premier League.
Arsenal are in dire need of defensive reinforcements, however everything appears to hinge on the Shkodran Mustafi deal which is still not set in stone. Reports have suggested Wenger could get his man today, but of course the report from Marca must be taken with a pinch of salt.
From a footballing perspective, Fonte fits the bill as an established player who can slot straight into the lineup, and commands a fee of just £10million however he is the wrong side of 30.
Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United will be the biggest obstacle as Fonte shares an agent with the Portugese manager, Jorge Mendes – a man well connected in Manchester.
Regardless, Arsenal need to get at least one centre-back and fast. They have reportedly identified Omer Toprak of Bayer Leverkusen and Simon Kjaer from Fenerbahce as potential candidates, with Fonte now joining the mix.

Fonte would be an excellent signing given his high level of performances for Southampton and now adding some winning pedigree with Portugal. The former Crystal Palace back would certainly supplement Mustafi’s potential acquisition, not purely in isolation. Arsenal need further reinforcements considering they are already incredibly reliant on Laurent Koscielny remaining fit for the next two months at least – we all know that is far from a certainty.
