Arsene Wenger is a long term admirer of Yoann Gourcuff (via the Daily Mail), and the Frenchman is currently a free agent. It was thought a return to Bordeaux was on the cards, but the Ligue 1 side are set to withdraw their interest due to his wage demands, as reported by talkSPORT.
The report suggests that we may now make a move for the 29-year-old, although we will still be facing competition from Liverpool and Manchester City.
It seems like a strange move, as the French international is well past his best. Our interest in him a few years ago was understandable, but we need to be aiming for a higher calibre of player.
He’s also an attacking midfielder, which is a position we are well stocked in. He wouldn’t get anywhere near our starting XI, with the likes of Santi Cazorla, Mesut Özil, and Jack Wilshere all likely to be ahead of him in the pecking order.

We could still do with making a few signings, but Gourcuff is not the player we should be chasing. There are a number of other areas that need strengthening, and we shouldn’t be wasting wages on unnecessary additions.
