The German international is one of the hottest properties in Europe right now and has been linked with the likes of Chelsea and Man Utd. However reports in his native Germany are claiming that the Gunners are big favourites to secure his signature.
German journalist Jan Aage Fjortoft, who correctly predicted Mesut Ozil will join the Gunners in the summer, says Wenger is in constant contact with the 20 year old and are in the best position to sign him.
According to The Express, he said:
I understand Arsenal are big favourite to get Schalke’s Wonderkid Julian Draxler.
I understand Wenger talk’s to him often.
Draxler hinted last month that’s he’s considering a move to Arsenal after revealing that he’s already spoken to Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Poldolski about life at the Emirates. He said:
I’ve always said English teams are very big clubs and Arsenal are one of them. I sometimes speak to Mesut or Per about the team, about the club, and they always have good words.
Draxler came from Schalke’s youth ranks and made his debut in January 2011 at age of just 17 years and managed to notch up 24 appearances that season, scoring three goals and helped his team to win the DFB Pokal and the DFB Super Cup at the start of the following campaign.
In 2011/12, he was a vital cog and featured a whopping 46 times, scoring five goals. However it was after the departure of Lewis Holtby that he began to fully realise his potential as he achieved his personal best in terms of goal scoring as he banged in 13 goals in 39 appearances. This season, he has continued to be a shining light for his club as he featured in 11 Bundesliga games, scoring one goal and supplying three assists.

He has represented Germany at several youth levels before making his senior debut in the build up to Euro 2012. In 10 caps for his nation, he has managed to score one goal. He is tall, strong and has a powerful physique and is unlike most other pass-masters around, bringing with him the classic play making skills of excellent vision and passing, agility and close control in tight areas and an eye for goal.
However the big question is, do the Gunners need another attacking midfielder? There’s no doubt that he is a massively talented player, but I don’t believe his services are needed in the short term. We are blessed with a plethora of options in the attacking department and I believe the money will be better spent on a position which needs strengthening namely the striking department.
Do you think we should sign Draxler or stick with what we have in midfield? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
