The January transfer rumours are starting already, with Arsenal scouts sent to watch Italian defender Daniele Rugani, according to Italian publication Calcio Mercato.
The injury to Laurent Koscielny aside (via Arsenal.com), we look fairly well set for central defenders. We have three quality senior centre-backs, while Calum Chambers is waiting in the wings if needed – not to mention Nacho Monreal and Mathieu Debuchy able to play there when in a pinch.
Despite a plethora of options, we have been heavily linked with a move for Rugani in the past. Arsene Wenger is clearly a fan of the 21-year-old, and the Italian report claims he sent a trusted scout to watch Italy’s Under-21 clash with Slovenia and to monitor the youngster.
Rugani has looked a fantastic prospect recently, and was superb for Empoli while on loan there last season. He would be a solid acquisition, but isn’t really the type of player we should be prioritising in the transfer market.
Arsenal transfer news
Arsenal fans would sooner see Wenger focusing on finding a top quality striker or a back up defensive midfielder for Francis Coquelin. There’s still quite a way to go until the January transfer window, but plenty of work obviously needs to be done before a transfer can be completed.
