The transfer window is fast approaching, and we are steadily beginning to see more and more rumours swirling around. The latest news from SportBild (via Goal) suggests that we are chasing two Bundesliga players, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Karim Bellarabi and Schalke’s Benedikt Howedes on Arsene Wenger’s radar.
Both seem somewhat unlikely, so it’s hard to see either player arriving at the Emirates this January.
Bellarabi may be what we need, as we’ve seen in recent weeks that we’re light in the wide areas. But Wenger prefers to deploy more centrally minded players on one flank, so would the German international have a place at Arsenal? The 25-year-old has also been linked with big money moves to the likes of Manchester City (via the Metro), Barcelona, and Manchester United (via the Daily Star), so we’d be facing some heavy competition for his signature.
Howedes seems a far more attainable, but almost certainly isn’t what’s needed. We have Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny, and Gabriel Paulista at our disposal, with Calum Chambers waiting in the wings for his chance. He certainly wouldn’t be a bad signing, but we should really be focusing our efforts on other areas.
Goal’s report suggests Howedes could be available for as little as £7m in January, while the Daily Star claims Bellarabi would cost closer to the £25m mark.
