Arsenal fans will never forget the days where Thierry Henry graced the Highbury pitch (and later The Emirates). His pace, power and clinical finishing never failed to bring the crowd off their seats. There were cheers with every goal, gasps in amazement when he did things that literally nobody else in world football could do, there was even the odd stunned silence as he sprinted through entire defences.
While Giroud has been admiral in that position for Arsenal this season, he simply cannot carry our team for an entire season. He also isn’t the paciest forward in the game, which is why signing somebody in the Henry mould would really get Arsenal fans excited for next season. Which is why it is worth noting that some reports have been linking us with Monaco striker Anthony Martian. These reports come from Give Me Sport, stating that Arsenal have expressed interest in the young Frenchmen. The report states that Schalke 04 have already made contact but have had their offer turned down.
Martial is not an established superstar and certainly is not what the majority of Arsenal fans will be wanting to see this season, but he is a signing that Arsene Wenger has become known for making. He has a taste for a youthful signing who has potential, and this boy certainly has a reputation for his potential. He was signed by Monaco last summer for €5,000,000 after making just 4 appearances for Lyon, which goes to prove how highly he is rated. He was also mentioned on the ‘Best of the Rest‘ section of Give Me Sport, which is a list of some of the brightest young talents in world football right now.
Here you can see a video showing the best bits of Martial this season. He certainly is an exciting player to watch, he has a burst of pace about him, and has a tendency to drop deep to retrieve the ball and getting the attack in motion. He has a burst of pace and is a real handful for a defender. He is also a decent dribbler and a good passer of the ball. The striker has scored two goals in 14 appearances (8 starts) in the league for Monaco this season. Another benefit in his game is he is versatile, appearing as a striker, just behind the traditional number nine, and also on the left and right flank of the Monaco attack.
Squawka gives us a good statistical analysis of Martial. He has 11 key passes and has created 12 chances for his team mates, which is a good return for somebody as young as him (19 years of age). As we all know, it is crucial that any striker, in fact, any player coming to Arsenal must be able to fit in with Arsene Wengers style of play, which is a quick passing style, which would not be a problem for Martian, who has a pass accuracy of 81%, and has a shooting accuracy of 55% , which is 12 % higher than Olivier Giroud and just 5% less than his team mate Falcao.
Overall, we all know Martial isn’t the striker we’re craving for, and probably wouldn’t be a significant step up from Yaya Sanogo. That being said, it would be foolish to rule out signing Martial, as he has bags of potential and could be a good alternative if we do not get our first choice options. What do you think Gooners? Should we sign Martial?
