Under-21s manager Steve Gatting has spoken about our disappointing 1-0 loss against Reading, and claims that despite the result there were some definite positives from the game, as reported on Arsenal’s official website.

A handful of senior players were once again involved, and Gatting picked out Abou Diaby and Jack Wilshere for special praise.
“Abou Diaby was excellent in the time he was on the pitch and Jack Wilshere was outstanding – the best player on the pitch by far,” Gatting said.
“We created a lot of chances throughout the whole game and it rested on the lack of discipline and concentration from their set-piece. Perhaps not taking the many, many half-chances we had cost us. That little bit of quality in the final third and penetration was perhaps missing too and let us down a bit. We’ve got to give Reading credit, I thought they defended really well.”
The pair are currently recovering from lengthy injuries, with both only recently returning to action. They have featured in a number of Under-21 matches, and look to be gaining match sharpness with every passing game.
The midfield duo will be hoping to return to the senior side before the end of the season, with our FA Cup clash with Reading’s senior side this weekend a possibility.

Both men are likely to struggle to reclaim a starting spot in the team, with our current XI performing superbly at the moment. We may need all the squad depth we can muster heading into the tail end of the season however, so it will be fantastic to see them return to action.
