Arsenal have announced the signing of Polish defensive midfielder Krystian Bielik from Legia Warsaw.
The rangy 17 year-old has been linked with us since late last year, and while he is probably too young to be a direct replacement for Mikel Arteta as the anchor player, the form of Francis Coquelin at least gives Bielik the time to improve away from the spotlight.
Arsene Wenger revealed last week to the Telegraph that Bielik would go straight into training with the first team squad, but that was before Coquelin’s immense performance against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
“He’s a defensive midfielder, 6ft 2ins, he has a good energy level and technical level,” explained Wenger to the Telegraph.
“It’s a gamble but, on what we saw, it’s worth taking the gamble.”

Arsenal’s official website states that Bielik is also able to fill in at centre back, but it’s hard not to hope that we do acquire a more senior player in that position this transfer window.
Bielik has only played five times in the league for Legia Warsaw, and once in the UEFA Europa League, but his performances have been impressive.
Given our propensity to give young players a chance in the first team, it’s understandable that players like Bielik come to Emirates Stadium. Let’s just hope we don’t have to throw him in at the deep end.
