Nacho Monreal has gone from strength to strength since he arrived at the club, and has quickly become one of our most reliable defenders. The Spaniard is set to be rewarded with a new contract, with Arsene Wenger keen to keep him at the club, as reported by the Mirror.
The former Malaga man didn’t look suited to the Premier League when he first arrived, and there were question marks over Wenger’s decision to bring him to the club. He steadily improved year after year, and has now usurped Kieran Gibbs as our undisputed first choice left-back.
He was heavily linked with a move back to Spain this past summer, with Athletic Bilbao keen on bringing the Basque star back to La Liga (via talkSPORT).
Monreal has shown his quality recently, but at 29-years-old he doesn’t have a lengthy career ahead of him. We should be working hard to keep him at the club, but in the long term we should be looking at new left-back options.

He seems happy at the club, so it’s hard to see him turning down a contract extension.
