The fine form of Celta Vigo striker Nolito has seen him consistently linked with a move away this January, and it seems as though we’re leading the chase for his signature. We’ve reportedly entered into negotiations with the player and club, with a view to bringing him to the Emirates in January, according to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo (via the Metro).
As the report states, the Spaniard has a release clause worth €18m (£12.9m) in his contract, but Arsene Wenger is looking to secure his services for slightly less (of course he is).
It’s also revealed that Barcelona have shown an interest in bringing their former player back to the Nou Camp, but they seem to have cooled their pursuit of the forward recently – if they were ever interested.
There are certainly question marks over the 29-year-old’s suitability for a role at Arsenal, despite his recent good form. He’s scored eight goals in 14 games so far this season, while also supplying five assists, but is he what we need?
Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott may not be up there with the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but they’ve been doing a superb job nonetheless. If we’re going to sign a striker we should make sure they’re a massive improvement on our current crop of forwards, and Nolito really doesn’t seem to fit the bill.
He’s also heading towards the final years of his career, so not only would we only get a couple of seasons out of him, there would also be no resale value whatsoever.

Arsenal transfer news
A striker is certainly high on our list of priorities, but we shouldn’t rush into anything this January if there are no suitable options available. This is an excuse Wenger uses often, but in this case it’s true. Either the Frenchman needs to splash the cash and convince one of the top teams to sell their star striker midway through the season, or he needs to wait until the summer and get a truly top class forward.
