Alex Iwobi has tripled his wages after signing a new deal with Arsenal, extending his current contract until 2021, as reported by the Mirror.
The young Nigerian has been in fantastic form recently, scoring in both his Premier League starts and quickly becoming a real fan favourite. He looks to have an incredibly bright future ahead of him, and Arsene Wenger is clearly looking to tie him down for as long as possible.
The report claims he’s just signed a new £30,000 deal lasting until 2021, despite only recently signing a £10,000 extension back in October.
Iwobi was threatening to break into the team in pre-season, and along with Chuba Akpom and Jeff Reine-Adelaide was handed plenty of opportunities over the summer and in the Emirates Cup. He has come on leaps and bounds since then though, and has quickly adapted to life in the Premier League. He looks like he’s been playing in the first team for years.
The 19-year-old grabbed a goal and an assist against Watford this past weekend, and hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down. The trajectory he’s on could take him sky high, and he’s got all the physical qualities required to be a huge success in the Premier League. He also seems to have real composure in front of goal, unlike the likes of Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who have been fighting for a starting spot for years.

It was hugely important that we tie Iwobi down to a new deal and show him we appreciate the contributions he’s been making, to prevent him thinking about a future elsewhere. Arsenal have a habit of overpaying academy graduates too quickly, with their socialist wage structure potentially ruining some young stars. If there’s one player that deserves a bumper new deal it’s Iwobi though, as we really do have a star of the future on our hands.
