Mesut Özil has been fantastic this season, with 18 assists and six goals in the Premier League so far. He’s been nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award, yet he’s somehow been left out of the Team of the Year.
The German playmaker has been one of the shining lights in a rather disappointing Arsenal season, and while few are suggesting he should win the PFA Player of the Year award, it’s ridiculous that he’s been left out of the Team of the Year.
As can be seen below, the midfield consists of West Ham’s Dimitri Payet, Tottenham’s Dele Alli, and Leicester duo Riyad Mahrez and N’Golo Kante. While there’s certainly some stiff competition in there, Özil’s omission is a real travesty.
Firstly, the fact that Özil has been nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award, while Alli has merely been nominated for the Young Player of the Year award, suggests he should definitely be in the team ahead of the youngster. If Alli really has been better than the World Cup winner this season, then why is he not nominated for the PotY award?
Very few players have contributed to more goals this season, with his massive numbers overshadowing almost every Premier League player. Dimitri Payet has just nine goals and nine assists this season, and while he’s been a key part of West Ham’s success, he really doesn’t deserve to be in the side ahead of Özil.

The only Arsenal player in the side is Hector Bellerin, and while the young Spaniard has been solid, he can’t hold a candle to Özil. Obviously a player’s inclusion in the team is dependent on the competition in their position, but it really is hard to see how the Arsenal No.10 has been left out.
A number of fans agree, and vented their feelings on Twitter:
Ozil nominated for Player of the year, Alli for young. Yet Alli gets in team over Ozil. Logic?

No Ozil in the PL team of the year?!
How can he be short listed for player of the year but not be in team of the year!

Alli has been wonderful. But to slot him into the TOTY could be bcz none have been that good. But Payet not better than ozil. No way

Ozil should be in the team of the season rather than Alli imo, can’t blame Arsenal fans for being pissed they have every right to be

The voting is obviously decided by peers and fellow professionals, but it really seems like Özil has been screwed over in this one.
