His contract situation was unclear initially, with his original deal set to expire this summer. Arsenal have revealed that the 22-year-old signed an extension before joining Villarreal on loan however, and is set to return to the club at the end of the season.

Although he has struggled for game time at the Emirates this campaign, he is undeniably a talented young player. To lose him for free after investing so much time in him would have been shameful, so the fact that he has penned a new deal is excellent news.

He may prove never to be of the required standard to make it at Arsenal, but he certainly has a bright future ahead of him. After a fantastic showing at the World Cup he was highly coveted, and hopefully this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Joel Campbell in an Arsenal shirt.
