Arsenal may have finished last season in second place behind 5000/1-rated Leicester City, but the lack of investment over the summer has significantly affected their title chances and consequently their odds looking a little dire compared to the other Premier League heavyweights.
Arsene Wenger’s men are rated fourth favourites for the title with 7.5 odds according to 888sport Arsenal betting odds just ahead of fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Elsewhere the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United, all sporting successful new managers, are looking fierce competition and the odds comparatively reflecting that. Of course, the competitiveness of the Premier League makes the season increasingly unpredictable especially after the multitude of surprises last season.
Manchester City’s serious investment over the summer not to mention having Pep Guardiola at the helm makes them clear favourites at 3.5. Manchester United are second with 4.5, while Chelsea come in at third with 6.5.
The Gunners, who are severely lacking defenders and require at least one attacking acquisition, will feel encouraged by their friendly win over Manchester City ahead of the opening match against Liverpool (although the Merseysiders beat Barcelona at Wembley-let’s not tell Arsene Wenger). However it’s a very long and gruelling season, and currently Arsenal’s squad are really lacking in depth in key areas of the pitch. Of course Wenger can rely on some bright young sparks to prove their ability, but placing such responsibility on the likes of Krystian Bielik and Rob Holding’s shoulders is not a position a club of Arsenal’s stature should find themselves in.
If Wenger wants to reduce the odds, some serious investment in the transfer market will do the trick this week. But we won’t be holding our breathe!
