We’ve apparently been given the green light to sign Real Madrid star Isco in January, with the Spaniard set to be sacrificed to make way for a new signing, as reported by Buzz Sport (via the Metro).
This is not the first time we’ve been linked with the 23-year-old, and Arsene Wenger has clearly been keeping tabs on him for a while. But Madrid are now ready to cash in it seems, with the Emirates a potential destination.
Isco is unquestionably a top quality player and any team would be lucky to have him. But he certainly isn’t what we need at the moment, so spending this much on him seems highly unlikely.
The former Malaga man’s favourite position is the No.10 role, a position we are incredibly well stocked in. Nobody in the world could displace Mesut Özil in the form he’s showing at the moment, so where would Isco fit in?
Wenger may be looking to play him wide right, utilising him much in the same way he does Aaron Ramsey. He’s certainly more suited to the role than the centrally minded midfielders we have at the moment, but should we not be targeting a more natural wide man if that’s the case?
He doesn’t appear to have the defensive qualities required to play a deeper role, so it’s hard to see him playing in Santi Cazorla’s vacant spot – currently occupied by Ramsey.

Isco would be an excellent acquisition as far as squad depth is concerned, but Wenger is unlikely to spend £36m on anyone unless they are guaranteed to drastically improve our starting XI. We’ve got far more pressing concerns ahead of stocking up on more attacking midfielders at the moment, so Isco’s signing should probably wait until we’ve at least signed a striker and defensive midfielder.
