Arsene Wenger is a long term admirer of Karim Benzema, and has been chasing him since his days at Lyon (via the Metro). We have received a massive boost in the hunt for the Frenchman recently, with Benzema apparently surplus to requirements at Real Madrid since the arrival of new boss Rafa Benitez, as reported by the Metro.
Benzema is a top quality forward, and is the type of Marquee signing we as fans crave. He is arguably the calibre of player who could take us to the next level, and really help us push for the title.
He has been superb at Real Madrid since his transfer in 2009, but the Metro claim he doesn’t feature in Benitez’s first team plans. The former Liverpool manager is allegedly planning on using Cristiano Ronaldo as a lone striker, with Gareth Bale taking his place on the left. This would leave Benzema on the bench, a role he is unlikely to be satisfied with.
His relegation to the bench could help facilitate his move to the Emirates, although if recent figures are accurate, then we could be looking at spending £38.3m (via the Metro) to bring him to North London.
The reports from the Metro suggest we are facing competition from both Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, but hopefully the presence of Arsene Wenger is enough to tilt the balance in our favour.
