Arsene Wenger has been handed a significant injury boost with the news that Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Jack Wilshere are closing in on a return to full fitness, The Telegraph reports.
Mertesacker has been struggling with flu for a number of weeks and while Koscielny has been fit, rumours surfaced from France’s international camp that he’d suffered a knock; which has since been revealed as a precautionary measure according to the report.
Wilshere seems to be making good progress from his fractured fibula and the report suggests that the midfielder may be in contention for a return following our game against Stoke City this weekend.
Rather ironically, our two clean sheets this season have come when Mertesacker and Koscielny haven’t been partnered together at the heart of our defence.
Gabriel’s performances against Liverpool and Newcastle have led to calls for him to start alongside Koscielny, a partnership that would allow Arsene Wenger to adopt a high-pressing game.

It will be interesting to see who Wenger chooses as our first choice pairing when all our centre-backs are available for selection.
