Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira is in contention to land the top job at Newcastle United after being drafted on a four-man shortlist to take over the reins from John Carver, BBC Sport reports.
In fact, most bookies have him down as the second favourite behind Steve McClaren (via oddschecker).
Vieira has been gearing up for a career in management over the past few years and is currently the manager of the U21 squad at the Etihad Complex.
Our Invincible captain was previously linked with a managerial role in the first team as the pressure grew on Manuel Pellegrini (via the Daily Mail), but it now seems like the Chilean’s job is safe.
Arsenal transfer news
Vieira had previously voiced his disappointment that Arsene Wenger didn’t call him upon his retirement to offer him a job at our club and was frustrated as to why many continue to ask why he isn’t currently at the club he loves instead of our rivals.

“Had he wanted me to work alongside him, he would have asked me,” Vieira was quoted as saying earlier on his month (via The Evening Standard).
“Both the club and Arsene have behaved disappointingly towards me. Everywhere I go people ask me why Arsene didn’t give me the chance to work with him.”
Vieira has returned to the Emirates Stadium only once since his infamous return to Highbury on that magical Champions League night in 2006. Our legendary skipper returned as a Manchester City player in 2009 in a goalless draw.
Should he return as a manager, Vieira’s legendary song will no doubt ring around the Emirates Stadium to welcome our prodigal son.
