Ian Wright is absolutely buzzing about the potential transfer of Jamie Vardy to Arsenal, with the ex-Gunner highlighting just how superb a signing he believes it will be in his column in The Sun.

Vardy has been heavily linked with an Arsenal switch over the last few days, and it seemed like the move would be completed before the Euro 2016 Championships got underway. That doesn’t look like it’s going to be the case anymore, but Wright is still desperate to see the Leicester City star in red and white next season.
“I think everyone is well aware how excited I am about the possibility of Arsenal signing Jamie Vardy,” he wrote.
The news of Vardy’s potential transfer to Arsenal has received a mixed response from fans, with many feeling he’s ill suited, too old, and generally that we could just do better. Wright just can’t understand this reasoning, pointing out that he was almost the same age when he made the switch to Arsenal.
He continued: “Do people not realise that when I signed for Arsenal my next birthday was my 29th?

“I wasn’t a teenager in the first flushes of their career. I was just over a year away from being a 30-something! But I’d like to think I did okay for the club.”
He certainly did more than okay for the club, but he needs to understand that the game has changed since his time. Most players no longer compete at the top level long into their thirties, especially those that rely heavily on pace.
Vardy is certainly still capable of great things and it’s not like his career will be over in a season or two. He’s a temporary solution and a short-term investment though, so you can understand why some fans would rather see a younger player arrive. On top of all that, despite his age Vardy doesn’t have as much experience as many players several years his junior, which is obviously a factor to consider.
Wright insists that Vardy’s acquisition would be a fantastic bit of business though, and believes he’d really add something to our side.
“Adding Jamie to the side would give the Gunners another dimension, and I believe that at this stage of his career he is ready to blast on and do even greater things,” he added.
“If they are getting him for £20 million, I can’t see it as anything other than fantastic business.
“In my view Vardy ticks all the boxes, in terms of ability, attitude, effort and achievement.
“He’ll run all day, he’ll work his socks off every second he’s on the pitch and the fans would absolutely idolise him.
“Throw in his goalscoring record at the highest level and you’re talking a real winner.”
Arsenal transfer news
We’re clearly going to have to wait a while to see the conclusion to this story, as with the Euros set to start in a matter of days Vardy will now be fully focused on England and the tournament. Wright will clearly be watching the title winner closely this summer though, and hoping that as soon as the tournament is over he’s announced as an Arsenal player.
