Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson believes that we do not possess the squad capable of challenging for the Premier League and insists that we still haven’t rectified the spine of our team, he exclusively told Arsenal Fan TV.
Merson is usually very honest when asked about his opinions on Arsenal, and he’s still adamant that a team challenging for the title cannot have holes in the squad he believes exists in our team.
After Petr Cech, Merson believes that a central defender, a holding midfielder, and a top-class striker are needed if we’re to end our 11-year wait for a Premier League title.
Speaking at a Play With A Legend event, Merson is clearly not feeling the optimism surrounding the club at the moment.
Arsenal transfer news
“It’s (Arsenal team) short, very short,” Merson told the fan channel.

“I think they need a centre-half, a centre midfield player and a centre-forward.
“That’s not very good when you need a spine of a football team.”
Few would argue with Merson’s claims although availability is certainly an issue with the players capable of improving our squad limited in number.
In centre-defence, the fact that Manchester City have just forked out £32m for a defender of Nicolas Otamendi’s ability (via BBC Sport) proves that the market for players in that position is certainly false.
However, with just over a week to go in the window, we certainly expect the club to try their utmost best to get a few more deals over the line.
