Ahead of our clash with Chelsea this Sunday, former Arsenal legend Charlie Nicholas has revealed that he would select Olivier Giroud over Blues striker Diego Costa if he were to pick a combined eleven.
The Spanish international made a lightning start to his Premier League career following his summer move from Atletico Madrid, scoring seven goals in his first four games. But having spent much of the season as the league’s top goalscorer, he now sits one strike behind Harry Kane and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero, who have both hit the back of the net 20 times this campaign.
Giroud is now fifth on the list, having scored on 14 occasions, with nine coming since the turn of the year. While he may be trailing Costa, the 28-year-old’s record this season is staggering considering he spent three months on the sidelines with a broken ankle. It has taken the Frenchman just 21 appearances – five of which were from the bench – to notch up his tally.
With that in mind, it is no surprise that according to the Daily Star, Nicholas would rather have our striker in his team when forced to select between the two.
“Up front, on his own, I’d have Olivier Giroud over Diego Costa,” he said.

“Look at Giroud’s stats, he’s been sensational when he’s been fit this season.
“He’s turning into the perfect Premier League striker with his power, touch, heading ability and confidence – he’s really moved up a level this year,” he added.
