Reports from Germany (via Bild) claim Arsenal have lodged a bid for Bayern Munich right-back Rafinha, and are willing to offer the Brazilian a three year deal.
We certainly need a right-back this summer, as with Mathieu Debuchy’s departure in January we’re really lacking options. Calum Chambers is the only real back-up we have for Hector Bellerin, and he’s really not up to the standard we need.
The fact that Bellerin is currently unquestionably our first-choice means we need to sign someone able to play back-up rather than first-choice, so a player in the twilight of his career yet still able to perform is ideal.
The 30-year-old is also able to play left-back, and his versatility is likely to appeal to Arsene Wenger greatly. The Frenchman often looks to sign players able to cover multiple positions, and with our constant injury problems that makes sense.
The fact that we’re apparently offering him a three year deal makes the report a little questionable, as Wenger notoriously doesn’t offer players over 30 such a long contract. Pace is also a huge part of a full-back’s job, and as you get older that is only going to further escape Rafinha.

Signing the Bayern Munich star could be a good move, as he’s proved incredibly reliable for the Bundesliga side over the years. We could certainly find a better right-back, but probably not one who was willing to play second fiddle to Bellerin.
