We look close to sealing the deal for our first transfer of the summer, with Arsene Wenger lodging a €35m bid for AS Monaco midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia, according to Italian publication Calcio Mercato Web.

It’s no secret that we are on the lookout for a defensive midfielder this summer, and Kondogbia looks to be exactly what we need. He isn’t a dedicated defensive midfielder, but his strength, agility, and tough tackling nature would add some real power in the centre of the park.
Despite the emergence of the fantastic Francis Coquelin this season, we unquestionably need back up in that department. We have seen the difference a midfielder of that nature makes to the side, and if the young Frenchman were to suffer an injury we would be in serious trouble.
Calcio Mercato claims we were facing competition for Kondogbia from Inter Milan, but insists that €35m is significantly more than they are willing to play. It looks as though – for the moment at least – we are relatively unchallenged for the former Sevilla man, and could well get our man.
