Arsene Wenger is apparently looking to have a bit of a defensive shake up at Arsenal this summer, by bringing in Paris Saint-Germain’s unhappy centre-back Marquinhos, as reported by the Mirror.
We’ve been undone time and time again by our defensive frailties, with our 3-3 draw with West Ham a perfect example. We looked dominant as we raced into a 2-0 lead, but defensive errors allowed Andy Carroll of all people to open us up. They scored two goals right before half time to really change the game’s outlook, with Carroll completing his hat-trick in the second half.
Looking back, it’s clear that all three goals could have been easily avoided, and while defending is the job of the team rather than the individual, errors can prove truly costly.
At times this season we’ve been exposed due to the lack of pace possessed by Per Mertesacker, and at other times we’ve seen poor decision making and catastrophic errors from Gabriel Paulista gift our opposition a chance. The acquisition of Marquinhos could go a long way towards covering those cracks, and the Brazilian international could prove an excellent signing.
We’d be battling the likes of Manchester United for his signature, but the prospect of Champions League should certainly be appealing for the 21-year-old.
Marquinhos cost PSG £25m back in 2013 (via the Mirror), and they’ll no doubt be looking to earn a substantial profit from his sale. The young defender is arguably among the world’s best in his age bracket, and he still has his whole career ahead of him too.

He’s unhappy in the French capital though, and after being left on the bench for his side’s Champions League clash he was allegedly very vocal about his displeasure.
A player wanting to leave often makes the transfer much, much easier, but with the number of suitors Marquinhos is likely to have we could get involved in a real bidding war.
Arsenal transfer news
It’s hard to see Arsene Wenger splashing such a huge amount of money on a centre-back given his previous record, but it’s a move that Arsenal fans would love to see him make.
