A defensive midfielder seems high on our list of priorities this summer, and it seems as though Arsene Wenger has identified his main target. The Frenchman has apparently made a £19.8m bid for Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho, with the Portuguese star impressing at the Euro U21 championships, as reported by the Metro.
We are badly in need of reinforcements in defensive midfield, with Francis Coquelin our only option as things currently stand. His emergence this past season was a revelation, but we can’t rely on him to play every single game of the season.
The 2014/15 campaign showed us just how important a tough tackling out-and-out defensive midfielder is in the modern game, and we can’t afford to leave ourselves light in that position.
Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta unfortunately no longer look capable of performing to the required level, so at the very least a back up for Coquelin is needed this summer.
Carvalho is young enough that he may not necessarily mind being rotated and battling for top spot with Coquelin, so he could prove the ideal signing if we can secure his services.
