Arsene Wenger is keen to bring attacking reinforcements to the Emirates this summer, with the Frenchman allegedly making an approach for Gonzalo Higuain, according to Italian publication La Gazzetta Dello Sport.
We have been heavily linked with the Argentine forward in the past (via The Sun), with reports even going as far as to say a deal was agreed with the then Real Madrid star. We were pipped at the post by Napoli however, and the 27-year-old has since proved a real success in Serie A.
Wenger is still a fan of Higuain though, and is looking to get his man at the second time of asking. Despite a decent season, Napoli have missed out on Champions League football – finishing fourth in Serie A behind Juventus, Roma, and Lazio. Higuain would no doubt prefer to be playing among Europe’s elite, and a lack of Champions League may have him looking elsewhere.
The Italian side have slapped a monster €60m price tag on their star striker however, says the report, a fee Wenger may be unwilling to meet. The £43m transfer would narrowly make him him our record signing, but it’s difficult to see this one happening.
The report from France suggests that we are facing competition for his signature from Atletico Madrid, and claims both of us have already enquired about his availability.
