We are badly in need of reinforcements in defensive midfield this summer, with Francis Coquelin currently our only option. Arsene Wenger is apparently keen on Borussia Dortmund’s Sven Bender, and has approached the Bundesliga club to discuss a transfer, as reported by German publication Bild.
The German giants struggled badly this season, and despite securing Europa League football right at the death, they were flirting with relegation as late as January. Their lack of Champions League football could potentially see an exodus from the club, with a number of top talents now accustomed to playing among Europe’s elite.
Bender could well be one of those that leaves the Westfalenstadion this summer, with Bild claiming the player is evaluating his options. He is on a relatively tiny – by comparison – £41,000 per week at Dortmund (via Bild), and would no doubt be offered a huge wage increase if he were to head to the Emirates.
The report goes on to claim that we have already discussed the transfer with Dortmund, which suggests that a move could well be close.
He is a top quality midfielder, and his strength and tough tackling is complimented by his ball playing ability. He is the type of midfielder that would seemingly interest Wenger, so hopefully this move is pushed through.
