We have long been linked with a move for Jackson Martinez, but it seems as though we’ve missed out on the Colombian forward after his agent revealed that he has signed a four year deal with Atletico Madrid, as reported by the Express.
Arsenal transfer news
It looked at one point like we were going to miss out on Martinez to AC Milan, but Atletico Madrid never really seemed to feature. The report suggests that we had triggered his £25m release clause earlier this summer, as it seems had Milan.
The former FC Porto man’s agent Luiz Henrique Pompeo confirmed that his client was La Liga bound, with Atletico beating off the competition for his signature.
“We thank Milan and especially (CEO) Adriano Galliani, who did everything possible to take him to the Rossoneri,” Luiz Henrique Pompeo said, (via the Express).
“The player preferred to say yes to Atletico Madrid for the project they built around him.

“The deal is done because I say it is.
“He has already signed on for the next four years and the Spanish club paid the release clause in his contract.”
Despite the report claiming we had met his release clause, there is no mention of us by Luiz Henrique Pompeo. This perhaps suggests that we weren’t all that interested in the first place, and weren’t as serious about signing him as Milan and Atletico were.
It’s strange to think that we wouldn’t be Martinez’s first choice if given the chance, and the thought that he might have even been considering joining Milan – who failed yet again to secure Champions League football – seems preposterous.
He probably would have been a solid signing, but we can certainly do better than Jackson Martinez.
