We are badly in need of reinforcements in midfield, with Francis Coquelin currently our only realistic option in the defensive midfield role.
The Frenchman proved following his emergence last season that he has what it takes to do the job we need him to do (and then some), but we can’t rely on him being fit and in form for the entire season.
It would seem a little harsh to bring in a new defensive midfielder to displace Coquelin this season, as the 23-year-old performed so superbly last campaign. For that reason, a young up-and-comer or an ageing star – such as Topal – could be the way forward.

Is he of the quality required to succeed at the Emirates though? There are certainly better options out there.
