Arsenal skipper Mikel Arteta’s new contract was announced last week with the 33-year-old set to stay for one more year as Arsene Wenger aims to benefit from his experience.
However, after announcing that Arteta had extended his current deal, the boss hinted that the Spaniard may have to expect a bit-part role next term.
“I expect him to contribute much more than last season, but he also faces a battle,” Wenger told Arsenal Player.
If that is the case, it may be in our best interest to appoint a new captain. One who is undoubtedly the first name on the team sheet and can be a reference point for the rest of the squad.

Here are five players who should be handed the captaincy if Wenger is looking for a change.
5) Per Mertesacker
Currently the vice-captain and given that he led us for most of last season, the German would be the obvious choice for Wenger.
However, much like Arteta, the amount of game time Mertesacker will experience next season is doubtful. Gabriel was brought in during the January window and after undergoing his adaptation period, he will certainly be looking to stake a claim in the first team.
